10 Ways to Cut Costs on Bulk Printing Orders in India
Why bulk printing costs more than you expect
Bulk printing orders — whether for events, direct mail, retail packaging, or corporate kits — can quickly exceed budget if you are not managing the variables. Here are ten practical ways to cut costs without cutting corners.
1. Order at quantity thresholds
Print pricing drops sharply at specific quantities. The cost per piece at 500 units is often 40% less than at 200 units. At 1,000 it drops again. Ask your vendor for a tiered quote — bump your quantity to the next threshold if the per-unit saving covers the extra cost.
2. Use standard sizes
Custom sizes require die-cutting setup, which adds ₹500–₹2,000 per job and slows turnaround. Standard A4, A5, A3, and DL envelope sizes fit standard cutting guides and sheet sizes — no extra cost, no setup delay.
3. Choose the right paper GSM
You do not need 350 GSM paper for everything. Flyers work fine at 130 GSM. Brochures at 170 GSM. Business cards need 300–350 GSM. Specifying a heavier stock than necessary — which is surprisingly common — adds 15–30% to paper cost.
4. Consolidate orders
If you have five different items to print, can they go to one vendor instead of five? Volume with a single vendor usually gets you better pricing, faster turnaround, and consistent colour across all pieces.
5. Go digital for short runs, offset for long runs
Digital printing is cost-effective below 500 units. Above 1,000, offset printing is usually cheaper per piece. Choosing the wrong method for your quantity can add 30–50% to the bill.
6. Supply print-ready artwork
Shops charge ₹200–₹1,500 for design work or file preparation. Supply CMYK artwork at 300 DPI with 3mm bleed and crop marks. Most print shops will tell you their exact specs — follow them and avoid file rejection fees.
7. Avoid rush fees
Same-day or next-day turnaround typically costs 25–50% more. Plan your print requirements 5–7 working days in advance. For large runs, 10–15 days is safer and usually cheaper.
8. Skip unnecessary finishes
Lamination, UV coating, and foil stamping look great but add cost. For internal use or short-lifecycle material (event flyers, menus that change seasonally), standard print without finishing is perfectly adequate.
9. Get three quotes
Print pricing in India varies enormously. The same 1,000-unit brochure job can range from ₹8,000 to ₹14,000 across different shops in the same city — for identical quality. Spending 15 minutes getting three quotes is consistently the single highest-value action you can take on any bulk print order.
10. Build a relationship with one vendor
Shops give better pricing to repeat customers. If you find a shop that delivers consistent quality, commit more volume to them. Shops will proactively offer discounts to customers who use them regularly.
