GST on Printing Services in India: Rates and Compliance Guide
GST rate on printing services in India
Under the GST framework, printing services in India fall under two rates depending on what is being supplied:
| Type of supply | GST rate | HSN/SAC code |
|---|---|---|
| Printing of content on customer-supplied material (job work) | 12% | SAC 998912 |
| Printing services where printer supplies material + labour | 18% | SAC 998912 |
| Printed books, newspapers, maps (exempt) | Nil | HSN 4901–4906 |
| Business cards, brochures, catalogues (printed matter) | 5% | HSN 4901–4911 |
Note: GST rates are subject to revision. Verify current rates with your CA or the GST portal before invoicing.
When is printing charged at 5%?
Printed matter — books, brochures, pamphlets, leaflets, catalogues, calendars — typically attracts 5% GST when supplied as a final product (i.e. the printer supplies both material and printing). Most commercial printing jobs for marketing material fall here.
When is it 12% or 18%?
If you supply your own paper and the print shop only provides the printing service (pure job work), the service is taxed at 12%. If the shop provides both paper and printing, the rate moves to 18% in some interpretations — though many shops charge 5% on the final printed goods. There is genuine ambiguity here and different shops may handle this differently.
How to get a proper GST invoice from your printer
- Confirm the shop is GST-registered before placing the order — ask for their GSTIN
- Provide your own GSTIN at the time of ordering (not after) so it appears on the invoice
- The invoice should show: your GSTIN, their GSTIN, HSN/SAC code, taxable value, GST rate, and GST amount separately
- Keep a digital copy — GST invoices are needed for ITC claims during your GST return
Input tax credit on printing expenses
If you are a GST-registered business, you can claim input tax credit on printing invoices as long as: the printer is GST-registered, the invoice is correct, and the printing is for business purposes (not for personal gifting or items blocked under Section 17(5)).
Practical advice
For large orders, always ask for a GST invoice upfront. On a ₹1 lakh printing order with 5% GST, your ITC claim is ₹5,000 — meaningful for any business. Many small print shops are unregistered or resist issuing proper invoices; factor this into your vendor selection if you need to claim ITC.
