Offset vs Digital Printing in India: Which Should You Choose?

What is offset printing?

Offset printing uses metal plates to transfer ink onto paper via a rubber blanket. It is the dominant printing method for large commercial runs in India — newspapers, books, packaging, and most high-volume marketing material are offset printed.

Strengths: consistent colour across thousands of copies, lower per-unit cost at scale, better ink density and colour accuracy, works on a wide range of paper stocks.

Limitations: high setup cost (plate-making), minimum order quantities of 500–1,000 units in most shops, not suitable for personalisation or variable data.

What is digital printing?

Digital printing transfers ink or toner directly from a digital file to the substrate — no plates needed. Inkjet and laser-based digital presses are widely available in India at both small print shops and commercial printers.

Strengths: zero setup cost, cost-effective for small quantities (10–500 units), fast turnaround (often same-day), supports personalisation and variable data, easy to proof and correct.

Limitations: higher per-unit cost at large quantities, colour consistency can vary between runs, limited paper stock options on consumer-grade machines.

Cost crossover: when offset becomes cheaper

The crossover point — where offset becomes cheaper per unit than digital — depends on the job. A rough guide for typical Indian print shops:

Which should you choose?

Choose digital printing if you need: fewer than 500 units, fast turnaround, personalised content, or you want to proof before committing to a large run.

Choose offset printing if you need: 500+ units of the same design, the lowest cost per piece, the highest colour consistency, or a substrate not available on digital presses (thick board, textured paper, etc.).

A note on wide-format printing

For banners, flex, vinyl, and canvas — neither traditional offset nor small-format digital applies. These use large-format inkjet printers and are priced by square feet, not by copies. Most offset and digital shops also have wide-format capability, or refer to a specialist.
